Survey and field notes, 1836-1922.

Illinois and Michigan Canal; Illinois River; Chicago River; and Des Plaines River survey and field notes were compiled by surveyors employed by Illinois and Michigan Canal officials. Besides describing the physical features of the rivers and canal, the notes also contain detailed topographical information about land adjacent to the waterways (i.e., prairie; firm ground; bluffs); trees and vegetation; adjacent streams and ravines; and existing buildings. The records also provide information on the locations of bridges, waste weirs, locks, dams, and feeders along the canal route. Record occasionally summarizes survey expenses.

After the U.S. Congress granted nearly a hundred miles of public lands (between Lake Michigan and Illinois River headwaters) to the state of Illinois for canal construction (March 30, 1822), the General Assembly passed a canal bill (Feb. 14, 1923) establishing the Illinois and Michigan Canal Company.
